“Suicide Prevention, Intervention, and Postvention: How Faith Communities, Community Organizations and You Can Help” with Rev. Dr. Rachael Keefe

November 2 @ 6:30 pm - 9:00 pm

FREE

Program overview
Responding to suicide is complicated. Depending on how we respond, the outcomes can be healing or hurtful. Rev. Dr. Rachael Keefe will examine the role of faith communities and other groups in suicide prevention, intervention, and postvention. We will discuss signs and symptoms of a person at risk, how to respond to someone who may be suicidal, and how faith communities and others can respond after a suicide. Rev Keefe will look at the influence religion has on commonly-held beliefs about suicide, and together we will explore how faith communities and others can provide safe and helpful messaging and support.

We are thrilled to feature Rev. Dr. Rachael Keefe, interfaith speaker,  currently pastor of Living Table United Church of Christ in Minneapolis, MN. She’s uniquely-suited as presenter on topics related to mental health, suicide, and the role of faith communities. She served as Clinical Chaplain at the State Psychiatric Hospital in New Hampshire working with patients, staff, clergy, and churches to increase understanding and welcome of persons living with mental illness. She has served on the New Hampshire State Suicide Prevention Council. Since her ordination in 1992, Rachael has served in diverse ministry settings, traditional and non-traditional. She has a Master of Divinity degree from Princeton Theological Seminary, a Masters from Princeton in Christian Education and Counseling, and a doctoral degree (DMin) from Andover Newton Theological School. She is also a painter and a poet.

Program and Discussion Groups will include:
* Ways to affirm life and build support connections for others
* How we can create a sense of belonging for people with mental health challenges, especially in faith communities
* What all of us can do to help PREVENT and INTERVENE when suicidality is present
* Replacing unsafe religious messaging with safe, welcoming, and inclusive language

All are welcome! Come browse the many Resource Tables beginning at 6:00pm.
